Well I was in index funds thru several bear markets and I never doubted that it was a good/great way to invest even in down markets.

You gotta remember that Wall Street hates index funds... always has. John Bogle used to get real threats when he started talking up indexing decades ago. Indexing is a threat to a lot of high-paying jobs, including some in the financial press.
