Of all the big oil firms, Shell has made the clearest bet on a lower-carbon, more-electric future… Shell’s strategy will probably pay off over the medium to long term. Nearer term, it can cause some headaches when oil prices unexpectedly rebound.

Although Shell’s daily natural-gas production in the fourth quarter was up about 2% from a year earlier and nearly 40% from full-year 2015, its liquids production—including crude oil and so-called natural-gas liquids such as ethane—was actually down nearly 10%.
