This pissing match over MEA & the ERC technology is amusing. But I have to weigh in here - Ecomike...you are way oversimplifying the role of a pilot plant in developing technology. It is NOT just a last minute design scale up tool. It IS the means by which you take lab scale technology and demonstrate (or not) that it can work efficiently & economically in a working industrial environment.

With ERC technology there are questions that have to be worked out for each specific plant application regarding CO2 capture & concentration - can that be done efficiently enough for the ERC to work well? Then there are issues such as catalyst efficiency and lifetime in working plant conditions - How efficient is the catalyst & will the catalyst be poisoned too quickly in the actual working environment of the proposed application? The exhaust stream of a cement plant vs a brewery vs a power plant are VERY different situations. Catalyst selectivity - how good is that under actual working conditions? Of course you would not be building a pilot plant if the basic technology had not already been proven to work in a lab environment, but that does not guarantee a successful process technology. A pilot plant is NOT little more than a sales tool - however it IS a great sales tool if it successfully demonstrates the tech works efficiently and economically and is scalable in a real industrial setting.

Then there is the simple observation that MVTG never got beyond the laboratory stage with the technology - this is a fact. You can talk all you want about Alstom and GE and LaFarge, etc. But this was a big FAIL for MVTG - they did not deliver on promises...however it was that this came about.

Now the climate (pun intended) has changed in the US regarding climate change...at least from the controlling political party's point of view...and they are doing everything to thwart progress on the science of climate change or implementation of tech combating climate change - its back to drill baby drill (note: this does not include private concerns that are not influenced by govt. policy). Any hope in the next few years of ERC being implemented will likely have to come from Canada or some European company.

So why build the pilot plant?

The PPlant is nothing more than a last minute design scale up tool used to gather the final sizing data for things like pumps and pipe diameters, pipe length, control valve CV selections, control and sensor location testing, all of which have nothing to do with the question of whether or not electrons flow in a circuit. All of which have nothing to do with electrode life time, which they already proved exceeded 10,000 hours with little degradation while making syn gas which has a 30 Billion dollar annual market!!

In fact a pilot plant is little more than a sales tool. If it works in the mini pilot plant, which it does, that has been proven, I can make it work full scale!!!!
