Northern Ireland remains a part of Great Britain but Ireland became an independent nation in 1922 and will remain part of the EU.

PM May complicated things when she insisted she didn't want a physical hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland. - https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/john-bruton-border-pledge-has-complicated-brexit-1.3335321

Without a border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, the EU wants border controls between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK mainland to prevent illegal shipment of UK products to the EU through Ireland as it's easier to control the ports and airports than it is to control a land border. But May also opposes a border between the Northern Ireland and the UK mainland which would require some sort of soft Brexit where the UK remains part of the EU market. (See map below)

Since WW-II the UK has taken in a huge Muslim and Hindu population from their former colonies of India and Pakistan who collectively are the largest ethnic minority in England. - These non-UK citizens could not settle in the EU outside of the UK without first obtaining UK citizenship - and were never especially welcome in the rest of the EU even after they had UK citizenship.

What most upset residents of the UK the most were the million blonde haired citizens of Poland who legally moved to the UK from Poland to take farming jobs in cities like Boston and construction jobs in the cities. Leading up to Brexit and following there have been a large number of hate crimes targeting Poles in the UK.

Personally if I worked in the UK, I'd be delighted to be transferred to German as Germany is far more like America than the UK is and I;m good with languages. For some moving from London to Ireland maintains their ability to use English, but the culture there is quite different to London.
