Thanks all y'all for the info on Ameritrade's inability to handle this relatively standard trading blip.

A McBrokerage like Ameritrade is now too big to care about humans, whereas Scottrade has always managed to satisfy my concerns. Too bad they've also been scarfed up by the Ameritrade monster, and too bad "grown-up" houses like Vanguard won't even mess with a lot of this stuff at all.
