Not always. The miner can control the CPU cycles stolen from the user (up to 100%).
I've spent the last several hours trying to research what is called "drive-by crypto miners". For KittP and others, it appears using MalwareBytes is the best way to go as they are reputable and seem to stay on top of new threats of this nature. They sell software for both Windows and Apple computers. I use a MacBook and will subscribe today. At forty bucks per year, it seems to be a reasonable solution plus it is very effective at blocking most other computer threats.
