The Curtiss-Wright Corporation obtained the first license for Rotary Engine Technology from Wankel and NSU in 1958 . Curtiss-Wright's Research and Development efforts initially involved naturally aspirated gasoline engines over a wide range of power (100-1000 HP) and for a number of applications. It is estimated that between the years 1958 and 1984, that Curtiss-Wright spent approximately $42,000,000 on the Research and Development of the Rotary Engine.
John Deere Technologies International, Inc. purchased the Rotary Engine rights held by Curtiss-Wright in February of 1984. Deere's contributions included further development of two engine series, the design and test of a new intermediate size engine and research applicable to all rotary engines.
