I understand my furry friend, after all it isn’t like we are still using stone tablets or Inuksuit to communicate (we actually have the wireless now!); but still I’m not saying that people south of the 49th are either wholly ignorant or uninformed, I’m saying that it goes deeper into the mindset of the citizenry. America was sold on “Manifest Destiny”, the isolationist Monroe Doctrine, and the “Melting Pot” ideas of societal structure; and when it was finally realized that – to paraphrase Orwell – “all men are created equal, just some more equal than others” despair, disillusion and distrust became the norm and the overriding raison d'etat behind both government and individual actions. Little wonder there is the “us vs. them” mentality. How do you overcome that? – I have no idea. And, when an individual or group “are unwilling to consider anything otherwise” I can’t help but apply the descriptor of ignorance. Thus endeth the diatribe. NO, wait, one more thing,…..
The next time someone from the U.S. of A. inquires where I’m from and, after hearing the response says, “Toronto? I’ve got a cousin there – George Smith – do you know him?” I’m going to reply in the affirmative and ask the individual to communicate with said cousin and request that he stop sexually molesting my sled dogs.
