Well- atheists never did this!

during the Thirty Years' War, 8 MILLION people were killed. This was a war of religion- specifically, my understanding of god is better than your understanding of god, and I'll kill any man who says otherwise. Which is what they did. For thirty years. Since there were roughly 20-25 million people in Europe at this time, well, you do the math. About a third- a third of the population killed over the same religion.
