Power7, however, is a surprise. Looks like this is IBM's way of saying goodbye to Xeon. I guess that spiffy chipset they did for Xeon hasn't worked out all that well

Last I heard the xSeries and pSeries guys work in separate
business units. Have a look at the last half dozen IBM quarterly
earnings reports. The xSeries boys carry the freight and that is
thanks to Xeon.

The interesting thing is how spooked the pSeries boys must
be to overcome the NIH factor not to mention throwing out the
system packaging/physical design technology that has been
the cornerstone of POWERx competitiveness since POWER4
to even think about hooking up with Opteron sockets.
