The hope: the immune system recognizes tumor antigens better, which is shown by dendritic cells. The immune cells are taken from the patient or the patient, loaded with antigens and activated. Back in the body they should activate further immune cells and thus a specific immune response against the tumor antigens. The procedure, which is also called dendritic cell therapy, is very complex, since the vaccination has to be produced individually for each patient. Value: Inoculation with dendritic cells is not a standard in cancer treatment: most of these approaches need further consideration. Whether they are effective against cancer has not yet been established. Until now, only the therapeutic vaccine DCVax®-L has been approved for the treatment of patients with gliomas.
