And it is indeed truffle season. In Italy, at least. The truffle festival in Alba begins on 7 October. Truffles are heavenly.

Truffle oil, however, is not. It lacks the subtlety of the real thing, and has a sort of chemical taste. On food competition shows like Chopped, it's often a pantry ingredient provided as a trap for the unwary. Contestants who use it are almost always eliminated in that round.

The same is true for sesame oil, for different reasons. Sesame oil is real; it's actually made from sesame seeds. But if you use too much--and Food Network contestants often do--it's overpowering.
