I remember driving through the desert in the late 60's on the way to LA and coming upon a commune of hippies with their surfboards stacked in the middle of no where, so I stopped and asked what was going on. The head guru was a geologist from Berkeley who had carefully calculated that when the San Andreas fault faulted at a time certain, this would be beachfront property and they were waiting for the big wave. He showed leadership and had quite a following, for all I know is still there. Sometimes smart people get it wrong, but still take a crowd. Shades of LQMT.
