Or maybe the prudent move would be to say, "This is the 3rd or 4th business they've tried over the last 10+ years. Let's see if they do better than they have so far"?

It's a $60 million valuation for God's sake.

When you think "there can't be that many people falling for this", remember the Bernie Madoff story and recall that over $50 BILLION of smart money fell for a great story.
