hrbart,

I could not agree more but in the absence of “the hear and now” licensing deals I’m trying to understand what IDCC’s business plan is regarding their specific IoT platform.

I think I’ve answered some of my own questions especially around why they are not directly involved with the Tier 1 Telco’s.

I listened to the presentation that IDCC has posted on their site:

IoT Software: Basic Components of the Platform
Webinar / Jul 2017 / iot

http://www.interdigital.com/webinars/iot-software-basic-components-of-the-platform

Some key points to me in the presentation:

-There are no fewer than 400 IoT platform providers based on proprietary technology and open standard (s) based architectures. All doing various tasks in the software stack, and some doing more than others, while some specialize in very specific tasks.

-IDCC uses the open One M2M standard for their Platform. There are other’s.

-IDCC’s platform is “connectivity agnostic” in the case of cellular and low power wide area networks (LPWA). They partner with Connectivity Management Providers.

-In the Harman partnership for smart buildings IDCC’s platform “piggy back’s the Harmon Gateway services platform.
IDCC’s platform controls the HVAC system and a few other tasks.

-In the CA Technology Smart Meter effort IDCC is using CA’s security platform as well they mentioned that they can incorporate Entrust Data Card PKI solution if a customer wishes.

-IDCC’s solution has basic edge processing and is able to store data locally or send it on to the cloud for further analysis.

-The platform does not do data analytics and it uses agents on the Gateway to control the sensors and mobile devices.

-The platform can be hosted in any “cloud platform provider” like Azure, AWS, Google etc. or hosted locally at the customers site.

There was one question that was submitted that asked what differentiates IDCC’s platform from Microsoft’s Azure or AWS or Googles solutions?

The Product Director stated (words to the effect) that it will take time to see if those solution providers will become the defacto standard for the IoT. IDCC is specifically based on the one M2M standard for the device service layer and management functions. She also said they work with MS as per the earlier announcement to host Interdigital’s platform in the Azure cloud.

There are more details but those are some of the highlites.

We can only wait to see if IDCC can get a significant piece of the IoT Platform Pie. AJMO

Cheers
