German battery consortium TerraE is using the same model as the semiconductor foundry business for two new European 'gigafactories'.
TerraE was formed in May by six member companies in the KLIB (Kompetenznetzwerk Lithium Ionen Batterien - Lithium ion battery competence network) to establish large scale manufacturig, or 'gigafactories', at two sites in Germany.

It has brought together 17 companies and research institutions to plan for building large-scale lithium ion battery cell manufacturing in Germany. This includes companies from throughout the supply chain, such as infrastructure manufacturing planners, material producers, machine engineering companies, cell manufacturers, and industrial consumers. TerraE is now looking for other partners in

The factories will be operated as “foundries,” with TerraE building and operating the factories where lithium ion cell customers can have products produced to their specifications.

TerraE is now beginning discussions with potential customers and investors, in particular from industrial sectors such as makers of forklifts, landscaping equipment and cordless tools, who need manufactturing capacity. It is also talking with energy storage and electromobility companies developing city buses, passenger cars and trucks who require a German lithium ion cell supplier to ensure strategic delivery security.
