Too big of a subject for me to digest, but a nice distraction from the action.

Several years ago it was suggested that Apple was investigating the use of Liquidmetal in Batteries.

Apple has decided to utilize the technology to explore the internal capabilities of a new fuel cell.
Using the Liquidmetal (or as the patent describes “amorphous alloy”), Apple is looking into designing an electrochemical battery, which generates electricity from hydrogen. This exclusive agreement that Apple has sign up for will give them technology which NASA say is “poised to redefine materials science as we know it in the 21st century.”

The new patent of Apple describes an electrochemical battery that generates electricity with the help of hydrogen. The material is an amorphous alloy or “metallic glass”. Apple signed a contract for using the Liquidmetal Tehnologies’ IP in consumer electronic products in 2010, but the plan was not completely fulfilled.

Apple Granted Their First Fuel Cell Patent

Apple's newly granted patent covers their invention relating to systems that use fuel cells to provide electrical power. More specifically, the disclosed embodiments relate to a fuel cell system which is designed to provide electrical power to a portable computing device.
