Amazon and the rest, for example, are buying lasers and other parts at a furious clip to equip their ever-expanding data centers, as this column recently noted (“New Internet Winners: Broadcom, Finisar,” July 8). The pace is so intense, and supplies have gotten so tight, that Amazon is bypassing traditional vendors and effectively manufacturing the parts itself. It has struck a deal with contract manufacturer Fabrinet (FN) and Macom Technology Solutions Holdings (MTSI), a maker of components, to design and build fiberoptic transceivers, the part that couples a fiber strand to a digital network.
