Welp, another TWO uncontained engine explosions of a Rolls-Royce Trent in just the last two weeks - this time both were Trent 700 series. Three incidents in about a month - same type.

June 12th incident on flight Sydney to Shanghai:

"“We are in contact with the airline and Rolls-Royce and will support the investigation of this engine issue,” said Mr Porter.

It was the second incident resulting in damage to an A330’s left engine cowling in a month, following on from a strikingly similar occurrence involving an Egypt Air plane in Cairo.
[Note: this article was written before yesterday's incident - which is the THIRD incident in about a month.]

Aviation expert, Byron Bailey, a former Boeing 777 pilot, said it looked to him like “the fan blade detached from the large fan at the front of the engine and caused a penetration of the cowling”.

“The interesting common denominator of the China Airlines A330, Egypt Air A330 one month ago in Cairo, and the magnificently handled Qantas A380 engine blow-up in Singapore years ago appears to be the very efficient Trent 700 engine,” said Mr Bailey

“I guess Rolls Royce, the manufacturer of the Trent series of engines, will be now be rapidly finding out the cause of this engine “ blow-up” and issuing instructions to airlines if any action such as immediate inspection is required.”

Butt wait, there's MORE - this from yesterday - an AirAsiaX flight bound for Kuala Lumpur with the same Trent engine blowup (coincidently also returning to Australia - Perth this time):

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-40396554

An AirAsia X flight bound for Kuala Lumpur was forced to turn back to Australia after an engine problem left it "shaking like a washing machine".

The pilot said the decision to return to Perth 90 minutes after leaving was made because of "technical issues" with the passenger plane.

"Earlier this month an Airbus A330 belonging to China Eastern Airlines was forced to make an emergency landing in Sydney after a huge hole appeared in one of its engine casings.

Several terrified passengers later described hearing a very loud noise soon after leaving Sydney for Shanghai. Images were posted on social media showing the extent of the damage.

It's likely, IMO, that most or all of these Trent rotor disk/blade failures are the result of stealing the GE/GE-PW trade secrets and applying them using Rolls-Royce's incompatible/inferior materials that cannot handle the stresses of the GE/GE-PW design.

This will probably wind up killing a bunch of people and it's Rolls-Royce's 'Ford Pinto' problem - they have no choice but to keep selling and servicing the Trents for the foreseeable future because they have nothing to replace the stolen GE/GE-PW design with.

i would nott want to be long stock that is dependent on Rolls-Royce gas turbine engine division. This could be a Johns-Manville legal liability as well as a potential for a shutdown of the production of Trent engines before a follow-on is available.

Trade secret theft karma. I have another trade secret theft karma story maybe later tonight involving a chemical plant.

Just don't steal trade secrets, baby. As Maude used to say 'god's gonna getcha for that."
