very interesting. I had the same experience once and asked my broker about it and was told the market maker has the right to 'first dibs' on orders. It's very annoying.

Is that manipulation of the price though? It is kind of like 'matching' the market price, but it does 'encourage' the price to then go the direction you want it to go because some other seller will have to cough up the 5000 to let you buy at your original price and if they don't you have to raise your price.

I mentioned this on the DD and FRAUD board just the other night and nobody commented on it, but lots of people slammed me for suggesting that market makers do anything other than make the market efficient and make small amounts on the spread difference. It came across to me as 'protesting a bit too much', but OTOH maybe they know what they are talking about and all the talk about manipulation is hogwash.
