NEAH battery uses only standard battery components that are found in existing batteries used today -- just used differently. NEAH has 15 patents and 11 pending patent applications for, among others, the use of silicon substrates for fuel cells and batteries. In NEAH's PowerChip Battery, the company is building a rechargeable lithium battery in a 3-D architecture, using industry standard materials

Neah Power Systems Awarded Two Patents for Powerchip Fuel Cell
Continues to strengthen PowerChip® Patent Portfolio

02 Feb, 2016, 07:30 ET from Neah Power Systems, Inc.

Neah Power Systems, Inc. (OTCBB: NPWZ, NEAH POWER) an emerging leader in fuel cell-based power solutions and rechargeable lithium battery storage solutions for defense, commercial, and consumer applications, proudly announced that the Company had been recently granted two additional patents, US 9,184,463 (Ohlsen et al) and US 9,112,215 (Cross et al) by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). These patents, along with the rest of the Company Patent portfolio, is critical to the overall success of the Company, and in particular to the recently signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a large South Africa based entity and the licensing agreement with the Government of India.

The patents apply to the one - of -its kind, non-air, methanol PowerChip® Fuel cell, versions of which have been shipped to the DRDO, Government of India most recently, and other customers in the past. These patents are related to the insitu regeneration of the oxidant used in the fuel cell. This insitu regeneration increases the energy density of the system, enabling a smaller, more compact, and lighter, fuel cell.

Just as a reminder, Apple's research teams have also been exploring fuel cells and in fact updated their original patent for it back in April. While the fuel cells aren't flexible, it at least goes to show us that Apple is working on an alternative energy source for future devices.
