Google and Verizon are the only 2 fiber to the home companies that I know of and they were never coax. Verizon was previously DSL which is over the phone line and a completely different technology also. I suppose there could be others, but replacing an infrastructure you already have that works with something new is never done because of how costly it is. DSL is slow and can't even come close to competing with cable or fiber internet. Google and Verizon knew that if they wanted to be competitive, they needed a better infrastructure and since they were starting fresh, fiber made sense.

Google's fiber to the home I believe is only in the Midwest in a very limited region where everyone has gigabit speed for really cheap. It was their test to see if it could be done.

For Verizon, they are just right place, right time. The dot com boom of the 90s left a lot of unused fiber buried everywhere and hanging on poles. Verizon made use of a lot of that for their infrastructure.
