How can anyone tell what is being done on internal side of the glass?

I agree, no-one can tell.

It may be to form a rigid internal structure with the BMG in direct contact with the outside frame, so too absorb the impact instead of it being transferred 100% to the glass case. Won't have to worry about surface finish for an internal piece.

Apple uses Sapphire laminates over its cameras for scratch resistance only, they still crack on impact.

The HTC has a 3D curve, Apple will use 2.5D curve, so less chance of hitting the glass edges in a drop.
