Yet votes for someone promising 40,000 more troops be sent to Iraq? and encourages others to do so.

right or wrong, let me try to explain the thinking behind this. At the time, there were many reports (which turned out to be true), that our troops went to Iraq under staffed and without proper equipment for the task. We were already there and the thinking was that our guys were being left out there to dry without proper support. So to bolster their position, it was thought more troops were needed in the short term.

That doesn't preclude, at the same time, planning on how to get the troops safely home and creating an exit plan.

Let me try an analogy... you've sent your child off to college in a foreign country... you find out it was a bad decision financially and is going to cost too much. You want them back home again to go to the local college. You call them up and they say they don't have food in their apartment to last out the week. So you wire them food money. Then you start making arrangements for their flight home, transfer to the local college, etc. In the short run, you've just sent them more money and it's costing you even more, but you're starting the ball rolling in returning them home and in the long run it solves the problem.
