Based on research done by others and me, on a different company currently in litigation, seems like an IPR is done either to try to get some claims of a patent deemed un patentable to reduce damages and therefore reducing the amount the defendant has to pay either by licensing or settlement.

Going into this IPR, RPX/Cisco knew that there was no way for all 30 something claims to be deemed unpatentable but if they could get a small number of claims kicked out then they would have some more leverage when it came to licensing or settlement or even a chance in court.

But, that is all thrown out the window now and its time to pay up!
