Trenching failed. What a surprise.

Initial trench work undertaken with a backhoe: depth of 8' which was above bedrock. Caliche [concrete-like soil component] was encountered. From previous experience, we found that we would need different, more powerful equipment to get to 20 + feet or bedrock and it could require blasting.

While it was worth a try with a easily accessible backhoe, continuing by bringing more equipment on site is not the best use of funds. Going ahead with drilling is more efficient. Core sampling will give us the answers we need about the location of the bedrock and other questions about near surface conditions.
