Gmen, I watched most of VP Pence's speech. I was reminded of a humorous True Story From Life.

In 1966 Notre Dame and Michigan State played their infamous tie. ND was 9-0 MSU 9-0-1. It was their last game and the winner was likely to be crowned National Champs. (before the playoffs)

With seconds left & the score tied, MSU punted to ND from near their own goal line. ND got the ball near mid field with the clock running down.

On first down, ND ran a play into the line. The announcers were going crazy. Second down, another run into the line.

"Parsigian is playing for a tie! He's playing for a tie!!!

And so it was. ND backed into the Championship.

At the time, sports writer Mickey Herzcwitz, was with the Houston Chronical. His column on Sunday morning was a play on the Knute Rockne movie where Ronald Reagan, playing the dying George Gipp, uttered is famous "win one for the Gippeer" line.

Mickey's story.

"Coach, when the going gets rough tell the team to go out there and tie one for the Gipper"

Interesting fact. George Gipp died of strep throat.

Another Mickey story. He was a funny man.

In a game in the Astrodome, St Louis was playing the Astros. A Houston runner was trying to get home from third. Cardinal's catcher, Joe Torre, went well out toward third, blocked the plate and tagged the runner out.

Houston went crazy, screaming interference. The out call stood. Next morning Mickey's column was headlined:

"That Chicken Catcher Torre"
