A good friend always said that having a core portfolio that was well designed was right for most investors. However, he also said, "But we all need to play in the sandbox, too." That was his description of his "hot stock tips" portfolio. It was his sandbox. I don't think it was more than 10% of his total portfolio, but provided him endless pleasure (and occasionally pain!).
Some of my best stocks that I AIMed I never would have found on my own. Some came from the AIM BB and many came from a friend in Ohio I've known for around 60 years. He's an all in, all out stock picker with a long term horizon. However, many of his picks turned out to be excellent AIM stock, too. In one case he was long gone from a stock he'd suggested and I was still AIMing it maybe 10 years later.
