This short article is exciting because it demonstrates the power and potenetial of DECT. GTE already has DECT integrated into their Hotzone equipment and has very successfully tested it in Mexico. DECT allows an entire enterprise to take their wireless phone service in-house and provides enhancements that the telcos can't offer. The US hasn't adopted it the way they have in Europe, but it appears to be a matter of time, imo.

Drilling contractor embarks on IP comms roll-out

Monday 4 September 2006

Stena Drilling has installed a new IP communications infrastructure from Mitel at its Aberdeen headquarters as the first step towards a global roll-out across its five offshore rigs and satellite offices.

The independent drilling contractor has deployed a Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform with IP-DECT handsets in a move that will bring Stena’s telecommunications management in-house, replacing a managed service.

The new system, designed and implemented by Nessco, will deliver wireless communication to the offshore rigs and introduce new facilities, such as video conferencing, in a move towards eventual mobile working for senior Stena managers. The new infrastructure is expected to bring cost and time savings and reduce dependence on external engineers.

Stena IT manager Sharon McLaughlin said, “We struggled for months with our old PBX system, which lacked the level of flexibility we required. Our drilling rigs frequently move and we need a system that allows us to adapt our telephony systems quickly and easily.

“Previously we were constrained by our traditional system and often found ourselves waiting days for an engineer to re-programme headsets and telephone ports, which was neither cost-effective or time efficient.

“We had also become frustrated that our old system didn’t support the video conferencing equipment we had invested in. We now have the flexibility to make moves, adds and changes ourselves and can integrate new applications quickly and easily.”
