The cause of Alzheimer's and most other dementia is not due to a "prion disease".

Its an interesting study and not limited to prion disease. The study revolves around correcting protein folding. Protein mis-folding is the main problem in prion disease but also a problem in dementias including Alzheimer's. If you recall, one of the main chaperone functions of S1R is correct protein folding.

That being said, AVXL has a lot to worry about before considering competition. Just be happy other potential treatments are being developed...it has no impact on AVXL in any reasonable time frame.
