I think "diversification" is a concept developed by the elite class of investors who want to make sure that they and their privileged buddies stay at the top of the economic ladder while everyone else should settle for the nominal gains to be realized by spreading their few precious extra dollars across a broad range of stocks. "Diversification" almost guarantees that no one who participates will ever escape the particular socio-economic level they find themselves in at the time they start investing. Any substantial gains are always going to be offset by the inevitable losses from other stocks if one believes in the concept of investing in multiple companies across sectors to protect against a substantial loss. Investing disproportionately in just a few great companies one knows very well is the only way to really accumulate wealth. "Diversification" is the brainchild of those who stand to get wealthy from the fees that they accrue from selling the average retailer a basket of stocks that end up at best with a mediocre average ROI.
