Dell's biggest advantage is having no inventory and consequently immediate ability to respond to market changes.

This is a definetly a big advantage. Second advantage is dell only has to provide service and support for CPU's from one supplier that it has very close ties to. I am sure Dell has done cost analysis on how much of a premium an AMD product would have to command compared to an Intel product to make up for the added cost of service and support it obviously was not worth it, this is a lesson Gateway had to learn the hard way.
