GARDEN UPDATE - 04 02 2017

Large transition from yesterday's snow/rain/sleet/snow storm to today's almost cloudless sky, which drove the temperature up to 59*F [15*C]. Spring finally arrived!

Normally I tutor on Sunday mornings, but the student cancelled due to a day trip, so I was free. With the sun shining, I knew my unheated porch would warm up nicely. I had six fig trees stored in a dark cold closet for winter protection and I moved them to the porch. They are out of their dormancy, as I saw the buds had started to form. I gave them a dose of water.

I prefer watering my seedlings with rain water, so I refilled six empty bottles. The rain filled up thirteen two-gallon containers, which will serve as my H2O reservoir until I put up my rain barrels this month.

The hard-neck garlic planted last November responded nicely to yesterday's 1.9 inches of rainfall, and so my first crop of the season is growing well. I then checked my Victory rhubarb plant; it has not broken the ground, but should very soon.

Throughout the afternoon as the snow quickly melted, I saw more crocus plants open up to the sun. Their blooms don't last long, but their perennial appearance signals that spring is here again.

Sunrise behind early clouds was at 6:25AM and it will set at 7:11PM.
