Kiwi - What effect new stents have depends on when they came out, and how many patients were implanted with old style vs. newest stents when they entered R-It. First patient was enrolled in November 2011. Patients already enrolled would not be able to get the new stents unless they had an event, which would remove them from the study anyway. Not that wikipedia is the best source of info, but here is an interesting quote about drug eluting stents (DES):

In 2012, a meta-analysis of clinical trial data was published, showing that, for people with stable coronary artery disease, DES has no benefit compared to treatment with drugs.[43] The New York Times interviewed the study's main author, who said that more than half of patients with stable coronary artery disease were implanted with stents without even trying drug treatment and that he believed this happened because hospitals and doctors wanted to make more money.[44]
