HDTV has different sizes - the STANDARD one is 1920x1080 (hence the 1080i label) - this is what is used in HDTV broadcasting of TV and movie content.
the 720x1024 one (720p label) is usually a result of resizing the main format to fit within a screen that can't take the punishment. Being a resolution change, you'll notice a loss in detail.
So unless your desktop resolution is set to the right level, then yes you'll get some kind of issue. Bear in mind though, desktop resolution and screen size are 2 different things - the desktop maximum res is a function of your graphics card.
