Every Strain Is Unique

Many plants are known to grow in different varieties, each expressing unique characteristics while still remaining similar enough to be easily recognizable. One of the most prevalent examples of this kind of variety would be the many variations of the classic apple tree. While Granny Smith and Honeycrisp may both be apples, they are each unique and different from each other while still maintaining an overall resemblance to the general apple’s appearance. At arm’s length both types would be quickly identified as apples, however upon closer inspection, each of the two would express different and unique characteristics. Those of you who know apples really well know that some varieties lend themselves to baking, while others to cider making.
Some of you reading this blog post may have followed in the fall tradition and recently visited an apple orchard in person. There you will have seen first-hand how each variety of apple is different while still staying true to the basic apple form. Hopefully there you discovered some of the special and unique characteristics of a new variety of apple to you. I was personally shocked to learn that the farm I visited grew five different varieties of peaches! I had no idea there was as much variety in peaches as there are in apples!
Similar to apples, there are countless different strains of cannabis. Each strain has a unique chemical profile, physical characteristics, and growth traits. While some strains typically produce large dense buds, others typically yield smaller fluffier buds. It would be an unfair judgment to label a selection of cannabis as poor without factoring in its known heritage and growth characteristics. Some strains of cannabis produce smaller buds, not due to the fault of the cultivator, but more so the natural expression of the plant’s genetic code. To be clear, every organism is the result of how its genetic code interacts with its environment. Cultivators strive to create the ideal environment for each and every strain to allow their unique characteristics to shine through.
Some strains are known for producing taller plants with fluffier buds, while other strains are known to produce smaller more dense buds. Some patients tend to fall into the old adage of “judging a book by its cover” when drawing conclusions about a particular strain after first opening their medical cannabis container. Please try to hold off any rush judgment, and verify if a specific strain is known to have a characteristic before jumping to incorrect conclusions. If you purchase a new strain of cannabis and you are surprised with what you see when you open the container, be sure to consume the strain before finalizing your conclusions. Just because a bud has a unique appearance, does not automatically mean it lacks potency, as the strain may simply be exhibiting its natural growth traits. The ratios of chemicals shown in the test results are far more important than how big, hairy, or crystallized the buds look to the eye.
