My two faint recollections of the 1980's are these: a) I attended a dinner meeting one evening in 1983 and a friend handed me beer. I don't drink. But I didn't want to be rude so I walked around with it and sipped it seldom. Half finished it and left it on the table. Had no other alky those ten years. But b) I did wake up one morn and said out loud: "Today I quit my one pack a day smoking." 1988? And I did quit entire. Cold. Never once thought of going back.
