Oroville, with a population of 16,000, is 80 miles due north of Sacramento, which releases into the Feather River then into the Sacramento River. (see map below)
To give you an idea of how much rain Northern California has received, this is the first time ever that the spillway on the Oroville Dam has been used since the dam was built in 1968 and inaugurated by Governor Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy.
Water dug into a crack in the cement spillway creating a hole which they have to fill with rocks and cement before it rains again a week from now.
To gain access to this spillway they needed to close the gate and allow water to crest the dam until the repair is finished. It's best that the 16,000 people of Oroville remain evacuated until the spillway repairs are finished.
