Lightwave Logic (LWLG) is a public material and device development company that is commercializing its leading Organic Nonlinear Polymers for a variety of electro-optic devices, with primary applications in high-speed fiber-optic telecom and data communications. Our development roadmap is geared to disrupt the industry by introducing organic modulators that have superior speed, lower power consumption, and smaller size than present inorganic devices. Our materials and devices are extendable into other applications, including sensors and optical computing. We are seeking an Electro-optic/Photonics Device Evaluation Engineer to work in our facility in Longmont, CO. Lightwave offers competitive compensation and benefits along with a fast-paced working environment.
Lightwave Logic is seeking an experienced electro-optic/photonic device evaluation engineer to enhance the company’s activities in developing fiber-optic-coupled multi-GHz optical guided–wave modulators and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on innovative electro-optic polymers. This position requires hands-on experience in optical and rf measurements and data analysis, and collaborative work in test equipment development. The successful candidate will play a key role in the evaluation, characterization, development and qualification of these modulators and circuits in this rapidly growing company.

These products will significantly advance the state of the modulator commercial art in low-power and low-loss operation up to at least 50 GHz, and will be key components in next-generation fiber optic telecom and datacom systems operating at 100 Gbps and beyond. The devices will be fabricated on silicon substrates and in some cases will be incorporated into nanoscale silicon photonic chips. The developed technology will be extendable to multi-modulator PICs.

Specific duties will include:

Evaluating loss, modal properties and other passive characteristics of electro-optical polymer waveguide devices. This task includes designing and implementing advanced fiber-based optical test systems, data collection and analysis.

Evaluating electro-optic properties of advanced polymers. This task includes helping to design and implement optical/electrical/mechanical test equipment.

Evaluating electro-optic properties of modulators, from low frequencies to multi-GHz (10-100 GHz). Tasks includes designing and implementing advanced electro-optic test systems for both packaged and unpackaged modulator chips, data collection and analysis.

Evaluating a multiplicity of modulators and passive polymer photonics device, including the use of statistical methods to assess device environmental integrity and manufacturability.

Operating and helping to modify and maintain as required, electro-optic test equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, DCA’s, lasers and photodiodes, micro-positioning mounts and data collection interfaces.

Supervising and directing electro-optic technicians. Working effectively as part of an inter-disciplinary engineering team that includes device designers, micro-fabrication engineers, packaging and test engineers and technicians.

Experience and Education Requirements:
B.S. or M.S. in relevant field, preferably physics, or electrical or optical engineering. Post graduate experience in characterizing high-speed photonic devices. A plus would be a solid background in advanced digital device evaluation using DCA’s, PRBS PG’s, LCA’s, etc.

Three to five years’ experience working in rf/electro-optic testing and commercial photonic device evaluation.

Demonstrated technical innovation and experience in related disciplines such as multi-GHz photonic device evaluation and data analysis. Experience with optical and/or electro-optic polymer materials highly desired, but not mandatory.

Experience in or good working knowledge of photonic devices, preferably guided-wave structures.

Demonstrated ability to effectively work in an engineering product-development team and with other relevant groups such as external suppliers, consultants, and partners.

Skill and experience in effective and timely communications both oral and written.
