I suspect Putin is still ticked off about all the land the USSR gave up to the upstarts that have looked west instead of east back to mother Russia.

The Putin/Obama reset never happened so Putin decided to go it alone realizing correctly that the USA after 12 years of war in the ME had no stomach for more.

Obama tried to stop Putin's intervention in Syria but Congress was going to have none of that giving Putin a free hand there. One has to wonder what Putin's end goal is in Syria. The only thing standing in his way to a warm water port is Iraq and Iran. And just think of all that oil.

His best shot is Trump where the two of them could potentially split the oil revenue and I'm sure XOM would be thrilled.

There is definitely a power vacuum now in the ME. Syria, Iraq and a leashed Iran.
