In the 70s I knew a man that was captured at The By of Pigs. He was imprisoned for over two years. His family was finally able to ransom him.
It cost them about $15K, but the Castro Government wouldn't admit to taking money as ransom. The amount of the ransom was expressed in tractors.
The Cubans wanted two "tractors" for him but his family finally convinced his captors that they couldn't raise more, so they settled for one " tractor.
Carlos said the worst of it was in the first several months. He said they were kept under the stands of a huge stadium, In 50 or so man heavy wire cages. Sanitation was horrible.
An officer and several guards would come into a cage and walk among the prisoners. He would point to a man, at random, and the guards would tie him up. Then the officer would slowly walk around the cage and pick 2 or 3 more.
The chosen ones would be dragged away. A short time later the prisoners could hear their companions being shot.
Carlos said that the first time the prisoners didn't know what was going on. When they heard the shots, they knew.
It became obvious that they were being subjected to torture.
