You seem to be misunderstanding the strategy of those that are shorting the stock. It's not about covering but about driving the company into the ground. It's been that way for many months and will continue much as is until Mgt either get this 900lb gorilla off their back or a clinical milestone is achieved to drive upward demand on the stock leading to a squeeze.

Shorts might be desperate or nervous but at this point they are succeeding in their strategy.
