They were the teams with the best records in their leagues over 162 games. Performance over the long season was all that mattered. It was a game of attrition, determination and survival.
Throw in divisions and wild cards and the value of performance over the 162 game season has become a footnote. You don't even get home filed advantage for winning the most games in the regular season. The short series...well, we've seen with Bochy and Bumgarner how little you really need to win it all.
