Any reason people can think of why the company would sell shares of one or the other to get the common and preferred around the same price?

Not saying that is what is happening, but curious.

Sure looks like the company is probably selling shares anyway, but ABSOLUTELY prefer this to the friend and family discounted convertibles, if so. Hope those have stopped, but you know the tiger/stripes saying.
