I agree with IMHO's reply to your AVXL options question. I would like to emphasize his point number 4...

4) If, at expiration the price does not reach $5.00, your options are worthless. Prior to expiration they will have some small value but will approach $0.

The October options will only pay off if we see a dramatic pps rise before Oct.21. If we do, Oct. options should be sold for profit before it expires unless the news takes it well above $5.00 and you want to exercise your option. This is why many would look further out, ie Nov, Jan, April. While these are more expensive for the same strike price the further in time you go , there is more time for real news and progress to develop that WILL put those options In The Money.
