Microchips,

Terry please help us. What is this weakest link in regard to optical loss?

But isn't that always a matter of design of testing?

My knowledge of automation in general is as obsolete as a ditch digger trying to run a steam shovel. My son is employed as a software type as I was decades ago but we seldom speak the same language. I am awed that the once bloody battles between software and hardware seem to have largely abated because of the enormous advance in technology.

Let me give you an illustration of a problem on a hateful old Digital Equipment computer that was never resolved.

[DEC had a "university" that I reluctantly attended for some weeks but learned why they should be despised. Manuals, rather than computers, seemed to be their primary sales volume. smile]

As an illustration of a problem that arose with one standard computer was one could type an "A," the minicomputer stored a "B" in memory occasionally and then echoed back an "A."

Teams of experts arrived over many weeks to find out how such a thing could happen. My favorite was one who sat motionless for long periods of time puffing on a pipe occasionally to prove he hadn't died. Parts were continually replaced like with a new car dealer and finally the problem, that was never really solved, went away.

Was it heat?

Once air conditioning went off on a weekend and all the computers were sitting in pools of water when we lab monkeys arrived on a Monday to a tropical climate in a less temperature-tolerant time.

I could go on endlessly about problems with electronic transmission of data that is multiplied with photons. We used photonic data but not for digital computing. Just transmission over long distances, even several feet as opposed to miles, could be difficult.

Heat was surely a primary problem but far from the only one.

Even under the best conditions data was unaccountably lost and I expect is today.

I hope I answered your question adequately despite my own obsolescence. frown

Best, Terry
