Does AD starts as AD or does it start as a less differenciated CNS accumulation of symptoms that at some points start evolving into AD. The same way that a heart attack doesn't start as a heart attack but with ( most of the time) the fat build up in the heart arteries that decreases their diameters and eventually clog 1 of them leading to a heart attack,
If 2-73 can be effective on other CNS deseases, it would mean that they have a common ethiology and activating the sigma 1 receptor maintain the brain healthier.
At this point, it doesn't matter if 2-73 cures AD, because it would become (2-73) the go to drug to maintain a healthier brain (the same way cholesterol drugs indirectly decrease the occurence of heart attacks by decreasing overall cholesterol therefor limiting the fat build ups).
The market is even larger than AD since all the population at risk would take 2-73 before getting any symptoms.
Also the patent for 2-73 with donepezil doesn't matter anymore, since 2-73 itself is already patented.
All they need to do is get a random sample of people (say 1000 over 65 and without symptoms), divide them in 2 groups (1 on 2-73 and 1 on placebo) and measure the % of those getting any CNS disease in each group.
