John Bonfiglio was named president and chief operating officer at TapImmune.

A bioscience veteran in Tampa has been named president and chief operating officer of TapImmune Inc., a Jacksonville company developing a vaccine to treat cancer.

John Bonfiglio — formerly the president and CEO of Oragenics Inc. (OTC: OGEN) in Tampa — said his appointment will help TapImmune grow, potentially open a Tampa office, and strengthen the biotech industry throughout Florida.

Bonfiglio had been a strategic advisor to TapImmune (OTC: TPIV) since early 2015, working with Glynn Wilson, chairman and CEO.

“There was a need for more senior people to steer the company forward,” Bonfiglio said. “Glynn Wilson was doing everything for a while. I came on last February as a consultant, helping out, and together we made progress moving the company forward.”

Bonfiglio’s role as president and COO will be to run operations, making sure TapImmune is meeting milestones and has the right resources for clinical studies. He will work with Wilson to bring in financing as needed and to represent the company in front of investors.

The appointment comes at a time when TapImmune has four Phase II clinical trials underway or about to get underway for TPIV 200, technology licensed from the Mayo Foundation that has potential uses in treating ovarian cancer and triple-negative breast cancer. The vaccine stimulates the body’s cellular immune systems to recognize and fight metastatic cancer.

“Immuno-oncology is just beginning to bloom in science, with new drugs coming onto the market based on the fact that we understand the immune system better than in the past,” Bonfiglio said.

One of the clinical trial sites is at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and TapImmune is talking with Moffitt about a potential second trial.

For now, Bonfiglio will work out of Tampa, where he’s close to the airport and the company’s law firm, Shumaker Loop & Kendrick.

“The company is pretty virtual at this point, with operations in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale and the corporate office in Jacksonville,” he said.
