* the AMA supports requiring background checks for all handgun purchasers

The American Medical Association .. http://www.ama-assn.org/ama .. will throw its considerable lobbying clout behind efforts to allow the federal government to research gun violence.

The nation’s largest doctor group, calling gun violence a “public health crisis” said Wednesday it will “lobby Congress to overturn legislation that for 20 years has prohibited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from researching gun violence.”

The decision .. http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/news/news/2016/2016-06-14-gun-violence-lobby-congress.page .. by the AMA’s policy-making House of Delegates puts the doctor group at odds with the National Rifle Association (NRA) and Republicans in Congress. The move is significant given the AMA represents practically every state and national physician association in the country.

“The shooting in Orlando is a horrific reminder of the public health crisis of gun violence rippling across the United States,” AMA past president Dr. Steven J. Stack .. http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/about-ama/our-people/board-trustees/our-members/steven-stack.page? , an emergency room physician from Lexington, Ky., said. “Mass killers have used AR-15s, rifles and handguns, and today we strengthened our policy on background checks and waiting periods to cover them all with the goal of keeping lethal weapons out of the hands of dangerous people.”

Many doctors within the AMA and at other medical associations say there is mounting research .. http://www.economist.com/news/business-and-finance/21700596-evidence-growing-gun-violence-america-product-weak-gun-laws-guns .. that has shown laws allowing people to carry guns and other weapons have been linked with an increase in firearm assaults.

The AMA and many other doctor groups have supported gun control for decades but often it has been a case of doctors speaking out at their meetings. The AMA meeting this week in Chicago was specific in that it wanted its lobbyists in Washington to engage with members of Congress to strengthen firearm restrictions and the research behind assaults and mass shootings.

Already, the AMA is on record supporting mandatory waiting periods before purchasing “any form of firearm in the U.S.” In addition, the AMA supports requiring background checks for all handgun purchasers . Such a measure has been bogged down by Republicans in Congress for years.

“AMA policy supports stricter enforcement of present federal and state gun safety legislation, and the imposition of mandated penalties for crimes committed with the use of a firearm, including the illegal possession of a firearm,” the policy linked here say .. http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/news/news/2016/2016-06-14-gun-violence-lobby-congress.page . “All of these policies were originally adopted in the late 1980s, when there was a national focus on handguns in part because access to relatively inexpensive handguns had led to an increase in rates of homicide, especially among young people. The AMA has repeatedly reaffirmed these policies.”
