A tortoise is most vulnerable while it is walking (appendages exposed). Mesenchymal are typically migratory, I wonder if their motility appendage exposure makes them somewhat more immunogenic/vulnerable -- among other things. I've wondered this before. Perhaps that's why they must transition back to another phenotype upon dwelling into a new location. Just brainstorming.
